It’s also a historic treasure, with a wealth of archaeological and built heritage both within the city and around, including prehistoric remains, Roman fortifications and remains, important medieval and later historic buildings, and two historic port areas. This is reflected in statutory designations within the city including 19 Scheduled Monuments, an Area of Archaeological Importance, 1600 or so Listed Buildings, and 20 Conservation Areas. Balancing growth with conservation brings many challenges, but also offers rewarding opportunities to influence and shape change. We are looking for someone with both archaeological and built heritage expertise and experience to take the lead in this exciting and rare role.
