The Government has announced a new national lockdown starting at midnight tonight; 4 January 2021. We will update this page with our latest service availability and COVID-19 advice as soon as we can.

With Exeter moving into Tier 3 restrictions from New Years Eve  (31 December), the following information details which Council services and facilities will still be open.

Please see the Gov.UK website for Government guidance on what can and cannot be done in Tier 3 areas.

From Thursday 31 December:

  • The Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery will have to shut to visitors in line with government guidance
  • All performances of The Wizard of Oz – this year’s Christmas pantomime at Exeter Corn Exchange – from 31 December onwards will sadly have to be cancelled. Full refunds will automatically be issued.  Should you have any questions about this please email  
  • Leisure Centres in Exeter will remain open to members only but must be booked in advance online at the specific centre website. Group activities and classes cannot take place.
  • Exeter’s free Red Coat Guided Tours will not now run
  • Exeter’s Custom House Visitor Centre will also be forced to close
  • Skate parks and tennis courts remain open
  • All City Council-run car parks remain open (the multi-storey section of Mary Arches Street Car Park remains closed while demand is low but will reopen if required in future)
  • Parks and play areas remain open across the city
  • As do allotments but with certain restrictions
  • Cemeteries remain open
  • Exeter’s historic Guildhall, the Underground Passages and Matford Sunday Market and Car Boot Sale remain closed
  • Exeter’s Famers Market will continue to operate with the first market after Christmas being held on Thursday 7 January

The City Council is now closed for the Christmas break but does still have a number of staff working over the holiday period to cover urgent matters in key areas of work such as homelessness, emergency housing repairs, refuse collection, cemeteries and burials.

Emergency calls can be made at any time including evenings, weekends and the Bank Holidays by calling 01392 277888. Calls should only be for genuine emergencies requiring immediate assistance.

  • The last planned boat lock in to the Canal at Turf Lock ahead of the latest government restrictions is on Wednesday 4 November at 9.00am.

  • Due to the new Coronavirus pandemic lock down restrictions the Red Coat Guided Tour service will be suspended from Thursday 5 November 2020 until further notice.
  • Following the Prime Minister’s announcement on Sat 31 October, the Royal Albert Memorial Museum we will be closing on Thursday 5 November.

  • Due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic we are unfortunately not in a position to open the Sunday Market and Car Boot Sale at the Matford Centre at present. We are looking at how this can be achieved and are looking at a way to re-open in the Spring of 2021.

  • With people spending more time at home, we have seen higher than normal demand for new or replacement bins. The pandemic has also affected the number of crew members available to carry out extra deliveries. This means we may not be able to deliver your bins (or garden waste sacks) within our usual 10 day period. We are working hard to clear the backlog and apologise for any inconvenience.

  • Information has been updated relating to the recreational use of the River or Canal (use of leisure vessels, kite surfing, paddle boarding etc), it is not essential and those who break the new laws could be fined for doing so.

  • Mary Arches Street Car Park and John Lewis Car Park will close from tonight .
  • All public toilets in the city have also been temporarily closed due to concerns over hygiene issues.
  • All playparks in Exeter have been shut down today in line with government advice around the Coronavirus outbreak
  • The allotments are all currently open and will remain so until we are advised otherwise. We have updated guidance for visiting the allotments following government advice.
  • We recognise that COVID-19 is unprecedented and will have a significant impact on our suppliers of all sizes. To assist with cash flow, all invoices will be paid on immediate payment terms, until further notice.
  • Due to the coronavirus emergency, we are suspending all bulky waste collections with immediate effect.

  • In light of COVID-19 we recommend that anyone planning an event until the end of July 2020 contact us on 01392 265205 or to discuss alternative dates.
  • To help protect vulnerable and elderly residents, as well as our collection crews, from the Coronavirus and getting COVID-19, we have suspended the collection of bulky waste items from inside the homes of customers.

  • Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, and the latest advice given out by the Government, the management of the Exeter City Council allotment sites has been adjusted.
  • Our council house response repairs service continues to operate as normal at the moment, so if you have a repair, please report it. Before we attend, we will contact you to find out if your household is self-isolating. As usual, we will prioritise jobs which are classified as an emergency or urgent such as no heating or running water.

  • Exeter Historic Guildhall
  • Topsham Ferry will not be operating until further notice.
